Where significant soil nutrient imbalance occurs, conventional farmers can maintain yields with up to 30% less fertiliser. In correctly balanced soils, more of the locked-up reserves of minerals become plant-available and interact with one another. The same process occurs in organic soils, where the result is an increased yield. In both cases growth is aided by minerals providing food for beneficial soil biota, but organic soils benefit more by having larger populations of these beneficial organisms.
